Waimea Valley is a cultural and historic landmark located on Oahu’s North Shore. It has seen many changes throughout history since Kamehameha the Great conquered O’ahu in 1795 and gave the spot to his trusted advisor Hewahewa who became its chief.

There were many political changes and many alterations that were mainly rooted in powerful foreign influences. These political changes have led to the demise of the traditional kapu (rule system) of laws. Its leaders eventually converted to Christianity and denounced Hawaiian gods. They also helped destroy sacred Hawaiian sites and religious idols.

The ownership of Waimea Valley has seen many changes over its history as it was passed from one individual to the next. However, in 2003, the valley was returned to the control of a native Hawaiian entity.
