Water flow meters are instruments used to measure the flow of liquids. These meters can measure the flow of fluids passing through a pipe. There are several meters available in the market today. These meters also have different costs, and their working principle is also different depending on your application. Before you choose a meter for your application, always make sure to use it for a specific application. Liquid Flow Meter Types

Mechanical Flow Meters

Mechanical meters are the most popular and affordable flow meters. These meters measure the flow of liquids through a spinning turbine. The spinning turbine should have a shunt, propeller, or paddle wheel design. These water flow meters operate by measuring the speed of water that passes over the tube and causes the turbine to rotate.

The volumetric flow rate of the fluid is always directly related to the rotational speed of the blades. Do not use these meters to measure the flow of liquids that have large particles or dirt. This is because they clog up, and this may lead to high maintenance costs. These meters do not work well when the fluid flow is low. Always make sure the flow rate is high.

Vortex Liquid Flow Meters

Vortex water meters are also among the most popular flow meters. These meters have high accuracy levels, and they use vortices from a meter dipped in the flow. Vortices are forces of nature, and they create swirls. They produce these swirls when they pass through an obstruction like water passing over a rock.

The vortex meters measure the flow of liquids by flexing a sensor tab side by side when each vortex flows past. This will produce a speed output that is directly related to the volumetric flow rate. The multivariable vortex meters can measure flow up to five times in one process connection.

The installation process of these meters operates well in large pipes. This is because you can install it into the tube by hot tapping with the retractor.

Ultrasonic Flow Meters

The ultrasonic water flow meters measure the flow of fluids by use of ultrasound. In these meters, an ultrasound will be transmitted in the path of the flowing liquid downstream. Another signal will also be sent upstream. In the most simple form, the time for the sonic pulse to go upwards. You will then determine the velocity of the fluid using this difference in time. The meter then determines the volumetric flow rate in the tube using this velocity.

Also, you can determine the BTU energy measurement using the volumetric flow rate and the temperature difference between the hot and cold legs. The clamp-on ultrasonic liquid flow meters can measure water from outside the tube. They do so by shooting pulses of sound through the walls of the line. They are flexible, and this makes them fit for measuring the flow of liquids in large tubes.

Magnetic Flow Meters

Magnetic flow meters are also one of the most popular flow meters. They measure the flow of liquids using a magnetic field. These meters use Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. When the flow is rapid, it leads to more voltage. The energy created is directly related to 6the movement of the fluid. 

The signal voltage will then process to a volumetric flow rate. Magnetic flowmeters do not show immediate accuracy, so you will not use them in custody transfer applications. They also cannot measure pure water because there are no ions to measure.
