An approximate budget has been given below to help you understand the cost of studying in UK.

Tuition fees in Universities in UK

Your expenditure on tuition fees depends on the type of course and university or school you opt for. There are many top-ranking universities in UK with their fee structures. The fee also depends on where you choose to study in the UK and your study level. There are different rules for England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. 

Generally, humanities, arts, and education courses are cheaper, while subjects such as medicine and engineering are more expensive. The tuition fees are typically higher for the postgraduate level, especially MBA programs which are often the most expensive.

  • Undergraduate bachelor degree – £10,000 to £38,000 per year
  • Postgraduate master’s degree – £10,000 to £32,000 per year
  • Doctoral degree – £15,000 to £24,000 per year

Calculate accommodation costs

The accommodation also captures a huge part of your budget for studying in UK. The cost of accommodation is directly based on the type of accommodation you choose. The main categories are:  

  1. Most universities in UK provide on-campus residence facilities to international students. These can be self-catered or full board. Certain campuses also offer self-catered shared houses or flats to their students. On-campus accommodation is a very affordable option.
  2. If you are unable to find such accommodation, you might have to look for a room for rent, homestay or find localhost. If you choose to stay in a private residence, look for accommodations closer to your university location. Generally, from £350 to £550 per month, you will find a decent place to live and study. 

The cost will vary from city to city. If you choose to stay in a rented apartment, you will have to pay extra for utility bills like water usage, electricity, internet etc.

Health support and insurance expenses

Several universities in UK have started comprehensive health insurance plans for international students. According to the National Health Service (NHS), you are required to pay £300 yearly for the duration the visa will be granted. 

Include your taxes

International students in the UK are permitted to work 20 hours per week during academic sessions and full-time during vacations. If you are doing a job while studying in the UK, then you will also have to pay the income tax and national insurance:  

  • Income tax: If you earn more than £1,042 per month
